Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that originated in Japan which consists of grappling and striking techniques that are used in close combat for defeating an armed adversary. The concept of Jiu Jitsu is to use the opponent’s energy against him rather than challenging it with one’s own force. Jiu Jitsu arose among the Samurai of feudal Japan as a method for overcoming opponents. There are multiple variations of the sport of Jiu Jitsu that lend themselves to a range of styles. Jiu Jitsu Schools oftentimes use all methods of grappling techniques – such as – holds, throwing, trapping, joint locks, gouging, biting, disengagements, striking and kicking. Presently, Jiu Jitsu is practiced in traditional as well as modern sport forms. Jiu Jitsu has transformed over the centuries and it embraces a philosophy of yielding to an opponent’s force rather than trying to oppose force with force. Manipulating an opponent’s assault using his force and direction allows the Jiu Jitsu practitioner to influence the opponent’s balance and consequently block the opponent from resisting counterattack.
